Lição 3 - JESUS, O DISCÍPULO E A LEI
19 Qualquer,
pois, que violar um destes menores mandamentos e assim ensinar aos homens será chamado o menor no Reino dos céus;
No Sermão do Monte, podemos perceber,
I. JESUS CUMPRIU TODA A LEI
profetas ensinaram. No lugar de enfraquecer a Lei, Ele devolvia o verdadeiro
sentido dela, já abandonado pelos mestres judeus. Jesus enfatizou o sentido
verdadeiro crescimento espiritual,
com o bem ensinou o salmista .
3. Jesus
cumpriu e aperfeiçoou a lei.
o Senhor Jesus a aperfeiçoou .
realidade do pleno cumprimento profético .
II. A LETRA DA LEI, A VERDADE
DO ESPÍRITO
1. O que a expressão “letra da Lei”
significa?
Lei.
2. A
A Lei Moral envolve
responsabilidades civis (individuais e sociais).
3. A Lei e
a verdade do Espírito.
Nosso Senhor cumpriu todo o Antigo Testamento,
obedecendo perfeitamente à Lei, cumprindo os tipos, sombras, símbolos e
profecias.
vida interior do cristão. Portanto, é Jesus Cristo quem impacta, aperfeiçoa e,
por meio do Santo Espírito, implanta no interior do crente o verdadeiro sentido
da Lei.
III. A JUSTIÇA DO REINO DE
DEUS
2. A
Justiça do reino de Deus.
A compreensão da justiça do Antigo Testamento,
baseada no binômio lei-obra, gerou orgulho pessoal e confiança nas próprias
fariseu que, por meio de sua justiça própria, achava-se melhor que o publicano;
aflição do próximo.
Evangelho do Senhor Jesus Cristo.
“For I say to you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 5.20)
PRACTICAL TRUTH
Followers of Jesus are called to live the righteousness of the Kingdom of God. This righteousness, based on the New Covenant in Christ, is born within the believer and reflects on the outside of life.
BIBLE READING IN CLASS Matthew 5.17-20 17
Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets; I did not come to abrogate, but to fulfill. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle will will omit from the law until all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments, and so teaches men he will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who will do them and teach them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 For I say to you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall enter the kingdom of heaven.
INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we will study about Jesus' relationship to the Law and what He wants from His disciples. We will see that the Lord Jesus fulfilled all the Law, we will highlight the difference between the Letter of the Law and the Spirit, and finally, we will analyze the righteousness of the Kingdom of God. In the Sermon on the Mount we can clearly see that our Lord did not destroy the Law or the teaching of the prophets, but fulfilled and perfected them. So, as his followers, our righteousness must transcend that of the scribes and Pharisees.
I. JESUS FULFILLED ALL THE LAW
1. A commitment to the past When our Lord began to teach, his purpose was never to deconstruct everything or not to value the past concerning the teachings of the Law and the Prophets. The expression “don't think” reveals just that. Now Jesus knew that the teaching of the old dispensation was valuable, true, good, and beautiful. He had never dared to be a revolutionary, bearer of a destructive spirit, as the apostle Paul did not either. Thus, we learn from Jesus that it is not possible to build a good future if we do not preserve the good things that the ancients bequeathed to us.
2. Jesus did not come to destroy the Law. For many opponents, Jesus was an agitator, a revolutionary, a destroyer of received tradition. Therefore, our Lord was the target of false accusations by his critics. However, the Gospels make it clear that Jesus taught about righteousness as Moses, the Law and the prophets taught. Instead of weakening the Law, He returned its true meaning, already abandoned by the Jewish teachers. Jesus emphasized the perfect meaning of the Law. He himself, the continuation of divine revelation, showed that this revelation is progressive towards perfection, not retrograde or static. In this sense, faith and teaching the Word of God should lead us to true spiritual growth, as the psalmist taught well.
3. Jesus fulfilled and perfected the law. The verb “to fulfill”, from the Greek plêroô, brings the idea of making full, completing, filling to the maximum to make abound, supply or supply liberally. Thus, the perspective by which Jesus fulfilled the Law is that He gave it perfection, as this expression reveals to us: “[...] it was said to the ancients: [...] But I say to you”. Now, at no time did Jesus conflict with the Old Testament Scriptures, but fully harmonized them. Therefore, unlike the scribes and Pharisees, who used the Law to abuse the people, the Lord Jesus perfected it. What was seen in the shadow gave way to the reality of full prophetic fulfillment. In Jesus, what was seen through the Decalogue and the prophets, was faithfully materialized in our Lord, as the writer to the Hebrews reveals to us.
II. THE LETTER OF THE LAW, THE TRUTH OF THE SPIRIT
1. What does the expression “letter of the Law” mean?
According to Paul's letters, the
expression "letter of the Law" refers to the Old Covenant. This
letter expresses God's designs in the form of written prohibitions that reveal
sin and lead to condemnation, as shown in Romans 7:7-25. In short, dominated by
the weakness of the flesh and without strength, man would be put to death
before the letter of the Law. The function of the Law is to show the sinfulness
of sin and the impossibility of man to save himself. In this sense, she served
with the paidagogos (from the Greek), that is, a pedagogue, a guide, who led us
to Christ. An example that reveals this role is the relevance of Old Testament
prophets to awakening people to true repentance before God. However, Judaism
transformed the “letter of the Law” into a system of cold and lifeless rules.
2. The theological perspective of the Law.
For the Jews, the Law presented its completeness through a triple division: moral, ceremonial and judicial. The Moral Law involves the Ten Commandments; ceremonial refers to the worship of God's people in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple; the judicial one has to do with several civil responsibilities (individual and social). By the system of the old Law, there was a false understanding that man could live justly according to his own merit and that, therefore, it was possible to be saved. Now the apostle Paul wisely refuted this false understanding. In his letters, the apostle made it very clear that the Lord Jesus fulfilled all the Law and that, therefore, he put an end to the Mosaic Law System, so that He offers a new and living way to reach God, a new covenant. which grants justification and peace to the saved.
3. The Law and truth of the Spirit.
Our Lord fulfilled the entire Old Testament, perfectly obeying the Law, fulfilling the types, shadows, symbols and prophecies. The cause of this perfect reality is the substitutionary death of Jesus, and so today, Christians are declared righteous through the merits of Christ's work. In accordance with this saving event, the apostle Paul says that the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. This shows that the New Covenant revealed itself in the person of Jesus, who generates life, and no longer in the heavy letter of the Law, which generates death. That is, from an external code of norms to an internal code energized in life by the Spirit; from words recorded on stone tablets to words engraved in the heart. The Holy Spirit brings life in Christ and imprints the will of God on our conscience and hearts. We have seen that Jesus fulfilled all the Law. In this sense, it is worth asking: is there a purpose of the Law for Christians? The apostle Paul answers this question by showing that the Law is holy, it is established, it is fulfilled in love and currently operates through the Holy Spirit, who energizes the interior life of the Christian. Therefore, it is Jesus Christ who impacts, perfects and, through the Holy Spirit, implants within the believer the true meaning of the Law.
III. THE JUSTICE OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD
1. Who is great in the Kingdom of God?
Matthew 5:18,19 shows that those who are considered to be “great in the Kingdom of God” are those who are faithful and doers of all the law of Christ. Consequently, those who neglect, remove, separate, violate the least of God's commandments, and do not heed his instruction, either through omission or transgression, are reduced to the status of minors. Thus, as disciples of Christ and citizens of the Kingdom of God, we must fulfill and teach the divine law from the power of the Holy Spirit who transforms, perfects and grants us grace and truth.
2. The Righteousness of the Kingdom of God.
The understanding of Old Testament justice, based on the law-work binomial, generated personal pride and confidence in the Jews' own actions to justify themselves. In the New Testament, there are examples of this: the rich young man who acted in this way to achieve the supreme good; the Pharisee, who, through his self-righteousness, thought himself better than the publican; the priest and the Levite who, established in their own righteousness, did not pay attention to the affliction of their neighbor. But Jesus teaches his disciples that the new righteousness in the Kingdom of God is inward, moral and spiritual and is no longer the old outward, ceremonial, legalistic righteousness. Therefore, the justice demanded by the Lord Jesus of his disciples is superior to that of the scribes and Pharisees. It is a more sublime, higher and inner righteousness. This righteousness can only be obtained through faith, allowing us to live righteously and godly and thus enter the Kingdom of God.
CONCLUSION
Jesus did not come to break the Law, nor did he live with a legalist. However,
he knew how to preserve what was good in the old Law, giving it a new dynamic
of life. Our Lord wants our lives to be uplifted spiritually, similar to His
character and conduct, putting aside all spiritual coldness and, warmed by the
Holy Spirit, embracing the true Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

GOLDEN TEXT “You are the salt of the earth; [...] You are the light of the world." (Mt 5.13,14)
PRACTICAL TRUTH The influence of Christians in society is inevitable. From the biblical point of view, the world cannot be indifferent to the true ones.
BIBLE READING IN CLASS
Matthew 5.13-16
13 – You are the salt of the earth; and if the salt is tasteless, with what shall it be salted? It is good for nothing else but to throw itself out and be trampled on by men.
14 - You are the light of the world; a city built on a hill cannot be hidden;
15 - Nor does he light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and give light to all who are in the house.
16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we will emphasize the role of “salt and light” that the Christian should have in the world. It is not enough to call yourself a Christian, but to make a difference in the place where we live. Therefore, we will take two metaphors by which Jesus taught about the relevance of his disciples in the world: salt and light. As the latter illuminates the place of darkness, and the former tempers and preserves food, we are called to influence the present world.
I - THE SALT SEASONES AND PRESERVES
1. Definition. In the Bible, the word “salt” appears as a white substance used as a seasoning, medicine and preservative. In Biblical Greek, there are at least four meanings for the word halas, a neuter noun for salt: 1) as a seasoning; 2) as a fertilizing substance for arable land; 3) as a substance that preserves food from spoilage; 4) as wisdom and grace in speech.
2. The importance of salt. We can say that salt has the function of giving flavor, because a food with the right amount of salt is tasty. This role symbolizes the moderate, balanced life, so it brings an idea of the believer's good influence on the world. Another function of salt is to preserve food from spoilage. When there was no refrigeration technology, meat was preserved by rubbing it in salt and leaving it in brine. This function brings an idea of opposition to the world, as Christians, like salt, are “rubbed” in a world in a process of moral and spiritual decay.
3. The Christian as salt. As Christians, we must influence a world that is in a state of spiritual rot. In this aspect, the Christian must express the moral and spiritual values of the Gospel in his life, opposing the values of the world. Let us not forget, therefore, our true identity in the relationship we have with this world, according to the words of our Lord: “you are the salt of the earth”.
II - LIGHT ILLUMINATES PLACES IN DARKNESS
1. Physical and metaphorical concept. Light comes from celestial bodies (self: stars; reflected: moon, planets, etc.) which brings clarity and, therefore, is capable of illuminating objects and making them visible. So the lamp emits light, the fire scatters the light. In short, light illuminates everything and therefore leaves no room for darkness. From a biblical point of view, light can be applied metaphorically to); to Jesus; The word of God; to the disciples of Christ.
2. The Christian as light. In the words of Jesus there is no doubt. Note that He did not say, ye must be the light; but yes: you are the light. In the Kingdom of God, what is expected of the Christian is that he be and live as the light of this world. When referring to the believer as light, Jesus mentions the good works produced by each one of us. These works are characterized by acts of love and faith manifested in the life of the believer through a true witness before men. Therefore, the will of God is that our good works should shine as light and be seen by all men and they will glorify God.
3. Light in places of darkness. When he said that a city built on a mountain cannot be hidden, Jesus was referring to the impossibility of hiding the brightness of the light. In the Kingdom of God, every believer is a light that shines in the world at all times. In this sense, the nature of those who went through the New Birth is to spread the “light of the world” through their own lives. Therefore, the believer must be in the place to which he was called, shining the light through the good work. However, it is necessary to pay attention to this biblical truth: the Christian cannot maintain his life as a light by his own strength, but through the Holy Spirit who strengthens him.
III - DISCIPLES WHO INFLUENCE
1. Being “salt”. Salt does not appear, as it acts in a hidden and silent way. This reference teaches us that, before publicly witnessing, it is necessary to renew the “inner man”. That is, before propagating a public message, it needs to be true within us. In this sense, our testimony will not be wavering. Thus, the salt could be out of the salt shaker, spreading all over the world.
2. Being “light”. As a light, the Christian must “shine” in the family, at school or university, at work and in the whole of society. Followers of Jesus cannot hide. They are called to walk in the light as God is in the light. Therefore, if our path is light, there can be no darkness. In that way there is no place for darkness, for the way of God is of light that reflects upon His Word.
3. Christian influence. Paul said that we have treasure in earthen vessels. That treasure is the truth of the Gospel. We must carry it as a flag in a world that lies entirely in the Evil One. Thus, influencing society does not mean that the believer is eccentric or flaunts something. On the contrary! The posture of one who is salt and light is that of an ambassador of a homeland, whose references are long-suffering, meekness and moderation, as well as other virtues of the Fruit of the Spirit. Therefore, the way of living through a new life, and doing good works, will lead men to glorify God. Let us therefore listen to Paul's advice: "See carefully how you walk."
CONCLUSION
In this world dominated by the darkness of sin, only the influence of Christ's servants can bring about true changes. It is necessary for the divine light to shine from us so that everyone can see our good works and glorify the Father. But it must also be remembered that without a true witness the Gospel will not be taken seriously among men. However, if the Christian shows a truly transformed life, sincere and without artificiality, we will play our role of salt of the earth and light of the world.
TEXTO ÁUREO
“Vós sois o sal da terra; [...] Vós
sois a luz do mundo.”
(Mt 5.13,14)
VERDADE
pode esconder uma cidade edificada sobre um monte;
casa.
16 - Assim resplandeça a vossa luz
no mundo: o sal e a luz.
e conserva o alimento, somos chamados a influenciar o mundo atual.
I – O SAL TEMPERA E CONSERVA
1. Definição. Na Bíblia, a palavra “sal” aparece como
substância branca usada como tempero, remédio e conservante. No grego bíblico,
graça no discurso.
2. A importância do sal.
II –
A LUZ ILUMINA LUGARES EM TREVAS
1.
Conceito físico e metafórico. A
Assim, a lâmpada emite luz, o fogo espalha a luz. Enfim, a
bíblico, a luz pode ser aplicada metaforicamente a); a Jesus; à Palavra de Deus;
aos discípulos de Cristo.
2. O
glorifiquem a Deus.
3. A
Nesse sentido, a
publicamente, é preciso renovar o “homem interior”.
Nesse sentido,
o nosso testemunho não será titubeante. Assim, o sal poderá estar fora do
saleiro, espalhando-se por todo o mundo.
3. A influência cristã.
Neste mundo dominado pelas trevas do
vejam as nossas boas obras e glorifiquem o Pai. Mas também é preciso lembrar de
